Fruit seasons is another interesting part and you must add to your Bali trip. It's the height of the salak (snake fruit) and durian seasons (January - March). The whole sale price hovers around Rp. 1,000 per kilo, which means that the rateil price of salak Bali is under Rp. 3,000 per kilo, salak pondoh is Rp. 8000 per kilo and sweet salak (salak gula pasir) is around Rp. 7,000 - Rp 10,000 per kilo (but could be up to Rp. 12,000 - Rp. 15,000 in supermarkets). Harvested salak are also used in the making of wine, chips, syrup, a chewy candy (dodol) and a crystalized salak (manisan). The most delicious salak are grown in Sibetan in Karangasem Regency, 20 km. notrh of Candidasa and 8 km west of Amplapura, where ata least 10 varieties are grown. At 400 - 600 meters above sea level and an average temperature of 20 - 30 degrees C. The Sibetan area is ideal for salak cultivation. Salak production ranks fourth after banans, oranges and mangos. The best durian come from the cool climes of the Pupuan arean in West Bali where people are now buying three for Rp. 10,000 and reselling them again for Rp. 15,000 apiece in Tabanan or up to Rp. 30,000 each in Kuta.
